In commemoration of Ernest Hemingway’s 120th birthday on July 21, 2019, photos of the author, his family and friends will be displayed during the year in Auburn. Some of the more than 80 photos are from rare private collections and have not been seen before.
The exhibit created in 2011, entitled Hemingway in Venice and the Veneto, was curated by two Italian professors from Venice University. After traveling through Italy, the exhibit was shipped to the East Coast of the United States and began the road trip from one Hemingway scholar to another.
The photos, printed on metal, reflect the time periods when Hemingway visited the Veneto region northeast of Venice in the course of his life. His first experience was on the Italian front in 1918, the second period when he visited Venice with his wife Mary in 1948-1949 as he worked on Across the River and Through the Trees published in 1950, and the third is the final visit while recuperating from two successive plane crashed in 1954 in Africa.
The Exhibit has been enriched by the addition of panels of quotes from his novels, including A Farewell to Arms published in 1929. Most recently, the photos and panels have been viewed in colleges, universities, libraries, art galleries, and at Rupert Murdoch’s vineyard.
